Description: Camped Friday and Saturday nights at Tioga Lake Campground in Mono County. Viewed Dana Lakes from the southwest and Mono Lake and Tioga Road from the Eastern Cliffs
Elevation Gain: about 2100 ft.
Dogs: Rocky and Jacques joined us.
Fauna: A Bald Eagle. A hawk that was eyeballing Jacques. A bear across the lake on Sunday morning.
Dinner: Friday night was a Build-a-Burrito Bar. Saturday was Barb's GF Pasta with Artichoke Pesto and D&J grilled salmon. We also had a donated fresh trout. Sunday morning was potatoes, peppers and scrambled eggs, prepped by Steve and Kimberly, cooked by Dave. Teddie & Jie washed dishes.
Participants: (9) Michael Booth, Kimberly Dawn, Steven Fotheringham, Jackie & Dave Lederle, Jie Lundquist, Teddie Matthews, Stefanie Rochow, Becky Teberg. Eric Teberg and Barb Hayes camped but could not hike because of foot injuries.
Comments: This was a remarkable hike and camp-out which we must do again. First, I broke a rib trying to help move a picnic table. A thunderstorm hit us on Friday evening just as we were starting dinner. Eric and others held his giant umbrellas over us so we could finish cooking. Then he and Michael rearranged his tent into a dining hall with buffet and seating for nine. Stefanie accidentally locked her keys in her car on Saturday night and it took 6 hours and several trips to Lee Vining for AAA to finally arrive. Dave was her hero on this. The Rim Fire was contained such that Tioga Road was reopened Saturday night. Stefanie was the first to drive it. Sunday, we all returned via Tioga Road and saw first hand the damage that the Rim Fire had caused. Trees were still burning and smoldering.

Sorry everybody! I will be doing physical therapy for 2 weeks and maybe getting some injections. I hope after that to have them look at my thoracic spine which appears to have fused belled out and is giving me issues when I breathe and my diaphragm moves. I just hope it is not impinging on the spine again. Hope to see you all sometime soon. Have fun! Have a margarita for me!
Tioga Rd. update: as of 3 PM on Sept. 8, it is still closed via hwy 120. 120 is open as far as Crane Flat and into the Valley. From the east side, via 395, Tioga is open to Tuolumne area.. Sharon
I've heard Tioga road is open.
I can make both Friday and Saturday for camping. I plan on leaving the valley around 2:00 to 2:30 pm Friday and am available to carpool.
hopefully, Tioga Pass Rd. will be open as far as the TH by then. The Rim Fire is a monster on the loose. No camping for me this time, just a day hike to one of my fave landscapes. See you there with my K9. Sharon
